What are implant issues?

Nasal implants (silicone, Gore-Tex, and similar materials) can develop issues over time such as show-through, shifting, contracture, inflammation, and elevation (turning up). These changes can relate to several factors, including skin thickness, implant type, and tissue reaction.

What matters most is accurately identifying the cause of the symptom. In some cases simple repositioning is enough; in others involving inflammation or contracture, removal followed by tissue stabilization and reconstruction with autologous tissue may be needed.

Depending on the condition, VVLY discusses the appropriate direction together, among keeping, replacing, or removing and converting to autologous tissue. Rather than an aggressive immediate reinsertion, tissue condition is judged first, and results may vary by individual.

Frequently Asked Questions About implant issues

Q.Does the implant always have to be removed?+

No. Depending on the cause, repositioning or replacing it can sometimes resolve the issue — this is decided after diagnosis.

Q.Will my nose look lower if it's removed?+

After removal, structural support is supplemented with autologous tissue and similar materials if needed. If immediate reconstruction is difficult, it may be done after the tissue has stabilized.

Q.There's inflammation — can revision surgery happen right away?+

If there is inflammation, stabilizing it comes first. Depending on the condition, reconstruction follows removal after a period of time.

Q.Can Gore-Tex also cause problems?+

Different materials have different characteristics, so the pattern of problems can vary — the type and condition are checked together.

Q.Why does show-through happen?+

It can occur when the skin is thin or the implant sits close to the surface. Supplementing the layer with autologous tissue is considered in that case.
